Inductees to be honored in Park City
SALT LAKE CITY - Two people will be inducted into Utah's Tourism Hall of Fame during the Utah Tourism Conference in Park City this week. The annual conference wraps up today at the Grand Summit Hotel at the Canyons Resort in Park City. Those selected include Bob Wheaton, president and general manager of Deer Valley Resort, and State Senator Dennis Stowell who will be honored posthumously. The inductees who represent Utah's tourism and hospitality industries will be honored during a luncheon today.
"Both nominees have exemplified the Utah Life Elevated® brand and were instrumental in the building of Utah's tourism infrastructure ranging from Utah's ski product to the beauty of our scenic byways," said Leigh von der Esch, managing director of the Utah Office of Tourism, an agency of the Governor's Office of Economic Development.
Sen. Stowell's public service spanned nearly 25 years, serving diligently as mayor of Parowan, Iron County Commissioner, and State Senator in the Utah Legislature. As mayor, he was instrumental in preserving historic buildings in the community. His service as a county commissioner and State Senator was invaluable as he participated in the creation of Scenic Byways and legislation created to maintain the Scenic Byways program in Utah. As an active participant in the Corridor Management Process for the creation of Scenic Byways such as the Patchwork Parkway National Scenic Byway, Highway 143, Sen. Stowell understood this program and its importance to tourism promotion and cultural heritage preservation along the byways. His last efforts on behalf of the Scenic Byways program included the sponsorship of legislation that finalized the Corridor Management process with the legislature for the Zion Corridor Management Plan. Utah's beauty in Zion Canyon will be protected due to Senator Stowell's efforts and his love, care and concern for Utah will be missed. Sen. Stowell is survived by wife of 44 years, Marilee Adams Stowell, seven children, and 17 grandchildren.
Bob Wheaton brings over 35 years of ski industry expertise to his position as president and general manager of Deer Valley Resort in Park City. Wheaton joined Deer Valley in 1981 and has held a variety of positions with the resort, being appointed general manager in 1988, vice-president of operations in 1989 and president in 1997. In addition to his responsibilities at the resort, Wheaton is very active in community organizations, including being a past member and president of the Board of Directors for the Park City Chamber and Visitor's Bureau, as well as president of the Intermountain Ski Areas Association Board of Directors. He currently resides just outside of Park City in Woodland with his wife Marion. They have two grown children.
